    hi, no the cream shouldn't drag and rip the sponge – it will possibly do this if you use a victoria sponge recipe instead of madeira cake. Madeira is much stronger and more suitable for taking the weight of the icing. We don't freeze the sponge, you can refrigerate the sponge once buttercreamed for an hour or two, but you need to keep aside a tiny bit of buttercream to smooth over just before you ice, because the first full layer of buttercream will have set completely in the fridge!
