See that the frosting started setting, I understand you didn't use butter-cream frosting. I liked the idea; what exactly did you use?
I hate fondant, but it might help with this recipe. If you cut out fairly thick strips in the color of your icing, (perhaps 1/5 of an inch, something around that depth), and then the width of you ribbon, and the length of the circumference of your frosted cake. Then if you placed this "fondant ribbon" around your cake first, when you wrapped the real ribbon around the cake, the fondant would be hidden, but the ribbon would lie flat and smooth over the texture of the fondant, rather than being a bit wonky, over the wavy frosting. Just an idea…
what kind of frosting are you using?
I LOVE this tutorial, was so helpful. I am making a wedding cake for a family member and I am wondering if you'd be willing to share your chocolate cake recipe for this cake??? Also any baking tips on baking a cake so big…I have 12 and 14 inch pans (smaller ones too) but its the larger cakes that I haven't done yet. The chocolate cake in this video looks so good, I've been struggling with finding the right recipe…..would love your feedback 🙂
That would be more for a wood bark look like on a log, these people wanted a wavy look.
Holds the top layers up so they don't sink into the bottom cakes from all the weight.
I get them from restaurant supply stores or from kitchen gadget places, you may also use a plastic dry wall scraper, go buy them at ace or home depot for very cheap.
great video! Thanks! where did you get the plastic cake scraper?
Stops the top cakes from crushing the bottom cakes and makes it straight, it is a support system. You must have them or the cake will collapse .
What does the dowels do for the cake?
