The recipe is written ignorantly American. Really hard to read when butter is measured in sticks, as if cups weren't confusing enough.

That cake looks too dry
Is “yellow cake” just vanilla cake? I’ve never heard of yellow cake here in Australia.
I tried a chocolte version of this cake (just replacing about 10% of flour with cocoa powder) and it came out pretty well, the texture is a bit denser and heavier than regular butter cake or pound cake and it is a bit less moist but it depends of course on how much you beat the batter (I used hand mixer) and how much time you bake. I think 45 min. baking is a bitt too long, it obviously depends on each oven.
